Henry Onyekuru resumed full training with Belgian champions Anderlecht today with his top target being to feature at the World Cup with Nigeria in June.
Onyekuru suffered a long-term knee injury last year, but he
has now fully recovered without having to undergo surgery as Anderlecht had
first said he would.
Belgian newspaper Het Laaste Nieuws reported that the Everton loanee and Anderlecht now hope he will feature in the on-going championship playoffs.I want to say thank you to everyone that made my recovery possible. The medical team, staff and doctors @Everton for their rehab and facilities. I also want to thank @rscanderlecht and the amazing supporters for their support and their faith in me during this journey🙏🏾🙏🏾 pic.twitter.com/evVuFT3S1T— Henry Onyekuru (@henryconyekuru) April 17, 2018
However, the newspaper also said the main target for the
Nigeria forward is to play at the World Cup in Russia this summer.
The player himself tweeted: “First day back in full training
with my teammates. Back to finish what I started.”
The winger was signed by the Blues last summer from KAS
Eupen, but was instantly loaned out to the Belgian giants for the whole of the
2017/18 season.
And the Nigerian international quickly found his feet at his
temporary club, bagging 10 goals in 28 appearances for Anderlecht including
some impressive displays in their Champions League campaign.
However, his time in Belgium looked to have been cut short
in December when Onyekuru suffered a serious knee injury, forcing him to return
to USM Finch Farm for treatment.
It was initially thought the problem could keep the
20-year-old out for the remainder of this term, but it was later revealed the
Everton man could still return to Anderlecht before the end of the campaign.
That ambition was realised this week as Onyekuru returned to
training with the Belgian side - and he has subsequently taken to social media
to thank everyone who has helped him in his recovery.
He said: "I want to say thank you to everyone that made
my recovery possible. The medical team, staff and doctors Everton for their
rehab and facilities.
"I also want to thank RSC Anderlecht and the amazing
supporters for their support and their faith in me during this journey."
