You may not instantly recognise the name, but there was a point
in 2017 when Emanuel Santos became the subject of worldwide ridicule.
Alas, the Portuguese sculptor was the man responsible for
producing the mis-shapen bronze bust of Cristiano Ronaldo that provoked an
avalanche of jokes, memes and viral mockery when it was unveiled outside
Madeira International Airport.
However, exactly one year on down the line, Santos has been
gifted a shot at redemption and been commissioned by Bleacher Report to take a
second attempt at capturing the Real Madrid superstar's essence.
In a documentary directed by Kelly Naqui and published by
Bleacher Report, Santos describes what it was like to be mocked by the entire
world (he said it was hard, both he and his wife cried during the interviews)
and why he stood by his original artistic decisions.
The first Ronaldo bust, if I hadn’t done it the way I did, it would’ve already been forgotten a long time ago,” he said. “So, sometimes it’s necessary to have a certain bravery to go against the usual and have an impact. Because even though there are people who mock and make negative comments, there are still many people who value it.
That's the spirit.
