Liverpool and Chelsea have been tracking a young Cagliari midfielder, while Newcastle could beat Man Utd to one of Serie A’s leading forwards, according to Thursday’s newspapers.
Liverpool And Chelsea Join Queue Of Clubs For Cagliari Star
Liverpool and Chelsea are monitoring Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella, according to reports.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp sent his scouts to check on the Italy Under-20 star and will have been impressed as he outshone Fiorentina’s Spain international Borja Valero in Cagliari’s 1-0 defeat in Florence on Sunday.
Sardinian newspaper La Nuova believe Barella, 20, is being tracked by several clubs, with the Reds joining Chelsea, Roma, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter in keeping tabs on a player, who is contracted to 2021.
However, in Tommaso Giulini, they’ll face a man who is determined to keep the player, with the Cagliari president telling Barella’s agent that he won’t be allowed to leave this summer.
That’s unlikely to deter the bigger clubs, however, and it remains to be seen if any will follow through and make a bid for the young midfielder
Newcastle To Rival Man Utd For Belgium Star
Newcastle could join the hunt for Napoli star Dries Mertens if they secure promotion this summer.
Belgian news outlet Het Nieuwsblad, via the Daily Star claims the Magpies will rival the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal for the in-form Belgium, who looks likely to leave Napoli this summer after a brilliant campaign.
West Ham and Crystal Palace are suggested as other suitors for the player, who has scored 24 times this season to make him the third top scorer in Serie A this season.
The 29-year-old Belgium international is out of contract in 2018 and looks unlikely to sign a new deal – which could force Napoli to sell to the highest bidder.
Italian newspaper Il Mattino claimed recently that a £40million move to United is being considered after Mertens held a two-hour meeting with Red Devils representatives.
Chelsea Want Barkley, Lukaku Double
Look away now, Everton fans. Chelsea have long been interested in re-signing Romelu Lukaku -- but now the Telegraph reports they could bid for the Belgium international striker and midfielder Ross Barkley.
It says the Premier League leaders "are carefully following the situations of both players," with Lukaku having said he will not sign the new deal on offer and Barkley out of contract next year.
And if Chelsea -- "considering whether to launch a huge offer" -- were to make a summer move, the double deal "could be worth up to £100 million."
The Telegraph says Everton value Lukaku at more than £65 million and will not consider accepting less than £30m for England international Barkley.
But it points out that there is plenty of money available to spend at Stamford Bridge, with Oscar having moved to Shanghai SIPG for £60m in the winter.
In addition, another big bid could come in for striker Diego Costa, also linked with a move to the Chinese Super League.
And the Telegraph reports AC Milan "will make an offer for Cesc Fabregas," while Nemanja Matic "is believed to be considering his Chelsea future."
Fire Keen To Spark Schweinsteiger Move
It seems inevitable that Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is on his way out of Old Trafford -- with the only question remaining is where he will go.
The answer to that, according to the Sun is MLS club the Chicago Fire. With a Manchester United exit almost certain, it could be next stop MLS for Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Former Germany captain Schweinsteiger has played only four games for United this season, and the Sun, citing reports in the United States, says the 32-year-old is poised to sign a deal with the Fire.
It adds that he has been told he can move on, "with United prepared to tear up his contract" and manager Jose Mourinho "adamant he has no need for the World Cup winner."
Liverpool Look To Leipzig Star
Speculation continues about what sort of summer revamp Jurgen Klopp might carry out at Liverpool, and the Mail reports that he is keen to add RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner to his ranks.
Werner, 21, joined the Bundesliga newcomers from Stuttgart and has starred in a season that sees them second in the table behind Bayern Munich.
The Germany Under-21 international, who can play on both wings, has scored 14 goals -- and he is not the only Leipzig player of interest at Anfield.
The Mail says scouts, who "have watched Leipzig for over a year," are also keeping tabs on midfielder Naby Keita and winger Emil Forsberg.
Straight back to Liverpool, where the agent of Marko Grujic has dismissed reports that Dinamo Zagreb could sign the midfielder on loan.
