Nigerian stars, John Ogu and Anthony Nwakeame, were both in action for Hapoel Be’er Sheva who lost 5-2 to Celtic at Celtic Park in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League first leg play-off clash, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
A first half brace from Leigh Griffiths and an opening minute strike from Tom Rogic gave the Hoops a comfortable lead at half time but the Israeli champions scored twice in two minutes at the restart of the second half through Palhano Soares in the 55th minute and Melikson two minutes later.
Goals from Moussa Dembele and Scott Brown however sealed an emphatic win for the hosts.
Rogic scored the opener for the Hoops after nine minutes from the edge of the area when he tapped in Scott Sinclair’s rebound.
Griffiths’ thumping downward header in the 38th minute off a Scott Sinclair cross into the bottom left corner doubled the lead for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Griffiths added his second on the night and Celtic’s third with a thunderous free-kick on the stroke of half time.
In Spain, Elderson Echiejile was left out of the Monaco squad that defeated Villarreal 2-1 at the Madrigal stadium.
