Startling revelations indicate that world soccer governing body, FIFA president, Gianni Infantino may have dodged a gift of $50,000 prepared for him by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) when he visited thecountry.
A report by gongnews.com stated Tuesday that an oil magnate and heavy financial sponsor of the NFF board led by Melvin Amaju Pinnick had been told how he would be helped to win election into Confederation of African Football (CAF) if he funds in part Infantino’s visit.
The oil magnate is said to have provided the money, which was conveyed in a brief case and delivered to one of two rooms assigned to Infantino.
It was learnt that, during his visit to Nigeria, the Franco-German soccer technocrat had a room in which he was expected to sleep and another where he was supposed to receive visitors.
The report by gongews.com stated further: “When the gift was brought, he was reported to have taken custody but as soon as his hosts left, he opened it and saw a sea of mint currency in American Dollars. He was so scared. All he did was to quickly vacate the room.
“One of the 17 FA Presidents who were invited to come to Nigeria is Infantino’s closest folk, the only one who voted for him in the elective congress that brought him to office. Infantino share what happened with him and how he vacated the room instantly.
“The source said, not too long, the hosts who brought the cash had to return there to retrieve the brief case and its content. The funder of the rejected ‘special gift’ is also expected to fund the payment of the German failure that the Pinnick Board has employed to come and help Nigeria miss its last opportunity to be on the international radar, the 2018 World Cup qualifier.
“Efforts repeatedly made to make someone confirm or deny the event proved abortive as even calls or messages we sent to the principal persons were not replied.
“Issue is, why did Mr Infantino avoided and rejected a harmless gift with no receipt? This is because his decision also sent the wrong signals to his friends who invited him to Nigeria to prop up their seriously dwindling acceptability with the people of the country.”
