With the Dream Team set to depart
for Rio on Monday, Head Coach Samson Siasia has announced Chelsea and Super
Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi as the new captain of the Dream Team VI.
Speaking
to his team on Saturday, Siasia explained that his decision came natural as
Mikel, not just being the Super Eagles captain, was also the
captain of Team Nigeria at the Olympics.
Mikel
takes over the captain band from Azubuike Okechukwu, who led the U23 team
to AFCON success in Senegal in 2015. Siasia also stated that in a meeting with
Mikel and Azubuike, the latter was happy to relinquish the captain band to
Mikel and the rest of the squad have accepted the decision with delight.
The
Chelsea midfielder becomes the first footballer to captain Team Nigeria- his
appointment to this role coming with strong disapproval in some quarters.
Mikel Obi
extended his gratitude for being named Team Captain and said he hopes the honor
yielded results in Brazil.
The Dream
Team are set to depart for Rio on Monday and would face Japan in the Olympics
on August 4th.
