Nigerian stars Sone Aluko, Chuba Akpom and Moses Odubajo of Hull City secured a Championship play-offs final showdown at Wembley on Tuesday after hanging on to secure a 3-2 aggregate win at the King Powere stadium against Derby County.
Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Derby took an early lead when Johnny Russell poked in before Andrew Robertson’s own goal doubled the advantage but Odubajo and his team-mates held off relentless pressure to set up a Championship play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday on 28 May. Akpom sat out the game while Aluko was not included in the match day squad.
Chris Martin almost levelled the tie after the break but his curling effort was palmed away by Eldin Jakupovic.
Victory for the Nigerian trio at Wembley will see them return to the Premier League at the first time of asking after relegation last season – a feat also achieved by champions Burnley. The Tigers’ victory condemned Derby to a ninth straight season in the Championship.
Every team in the history of the Football League play-offs who had gone into the second leg of a semi-final tie with a three-goal lead had gone on to reach the final.
But Hull looked nervous from the kick-off in front of a sell-out home crowd, and the tension only increased when Scotland striker Russell was given too much room in the box to stab home from three yards.
