Rivers United 1-0 Akwa United
Rivers United have returned to the summit of the Nigeria league after they beat Akwa United 1-0 Wednesday courtesy of a fourth minute strike by on-form Bernard Ovoke; his 5th of the season.
The Port Harcourt club now have 34 points from 18 matches, while erstwhile leaders Rangers will only play on Friday night against regional rivals Heartland.
Ikorodu 1-0 Warri Wolves
Coach Sam Okpodu has had something to cheer him up when his bottom club Ikorodu United pipped his former club Warri Wolves 1-0 on Wednesday.
Former international Okpodu was assistant coach when Wolves finished runners-up last season, but he failed to stay put at his hometown club this term after a pay dispute.
His immediate task now is to ensure Ikorodu United are not relegated in their debut season in the top flight.
Fatai Oluwadayo’s well-taken free kick goal after 42 minutes proved to be the match winner for Ikorodu United on the day. The Lagos club swarmed over their visitors from the first whistle and deserved their fourth win of the season.
Sunshine Stars 3-1 Wikki Tourist
It was a battle of strikers when hosts Sunshine Stars beat Wikki Tourists 3-1 as Nigeria league leading scorer Godwin Obaje netted his 12th goal of the season with Afolabi Okiki grabbing a brace to take his tally to 10 goals.
The home side opened scoring through Man-of-the-Match Afolabi Okiki who coolly slotted home from the spot to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Wikki came out fighting and got the equalizer just before half-time through inform striker Godwin Obaje before picking up a yellow card at the start of the second half.
Okiki Afolabi got on the end of a fantastic cross and planted his header beyond the opponents’ goalkeeper to make it 2-1 and club Captain Abe Sunday put the game beyond the visitors as he taped in the third goal.
Okiki missed the opportunity to score the third goal as his shot went straight into the waiting hands of the goalkeeper but the host will be happy with their performance as they ran out 3-1 winners to the delight of their fans.Nigeria league results Wednesday
Shooting Stars 2-0 Abia Warriors
Shooting Stars finally ended their six-match win-less streak in the Nigeria Professional Football League on Wednesday as they piped second-placed Abia Warriors 2-0 in their Match Day 18 tie at the Lekan Stadium in Ibadan.
Second half goals from Kabir Umar and Muyiwa Lawal gave the Oluyole Warriors some respite even though they stay 3rd from the bottom after recording just their sixth win of the season.
The build up to the 3SC vs Abia Warriors clash was overshadowed with the resignation of Technical Head, Kadiri Ikhana and then calls by fans for the sacking of the General manager, Rasheed Balogun.
With the first half of the midweek clash ending in a stalemate, fans were already getting agitated that it could yet be another bad day at the office for their darling team.
However, Umar broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half before Lawal netted the ‘insurance’ goal in the 56th minute.
With the win, Shooting Stars now have 20 points from 18 games while for Abia Warriors, they are third on the log with 30 points from 17 games.
