Romelu Lukaku scored twice against his former club as Everton beat Chelsea 2-0 in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Goodison Park to ensure the fallen champions will finish a woeful season empty-handed.
Lukaku broke the deadlock with a brilliant strike on 78 and wrapped up the win five minutes later, before Diego Costa was sent off after a flashpoint with Gareth Barry. Barry himself was later sent off after collecting his second booking of the match for a cynical challenge on Cesc Fabregas.
The first half saw plenty of rough and tumble, but little quality in front of goal as both sides – facing each other for a fifth time this season – cancelled one another out.
Diego Costa spurned the best opening of the match in the 58th minute when he rounded Joel Robles but fired his effort across goal from a narrow angle.
But Lukaku showed him how it was done with a brilliantly taken double to fire Roberto Martinez’s side into their second domestic semi-final of the season.
