A second half free kick goal by Frederick Obomate was all Rivers United needed to shot down champions Enyimba at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Stocky midfielder Obomate conjured a magical free kick in the 65th minute beyond goalkeeper Femi Thomas for what will prove the match winner.
This loss has extended the losing streak of ‘The People’s Elephant’ after they lost a CAF Champions League tie at Uganda’s SC Vipers and they fell to cup holders Akwa United in the season-opening Charity Shield in midweek.
Rivers United, formerly Dolphins, barely survived relegation last season.

Newly promoted MFM FC got off to a winning start in the Nigeria premier league after they defeated home team Nasarawa United 2-1 on Sunday.
Former Sunshine Stars striker Musa Newman shot MFM in front after 18 minutes. The visitors doubled their lead on 33 minutes through Chukwuka Emmanuel.
Ifeanyi Nweke pulled a goal back for Nasarawa in the 75th minute, but the home team could not muster enough to at least get a share of the spoils on the day.

Kingsley Eduwo scored the goal that gave visiting Lobi Stars victory over his former club Shooting Stars on Sunday. Eduwo, who played for Shooting Stars two seasons ago, smashed what proved the match winner after 15 minutes of action in Ibadan.

Abia warriors went ahead through Ndifreke Effiong in the first half, but Kennedy Boboye’s men were pegged back five minutes after the break through Agbane. The game was played in front of a crowd at the Onikan which included the chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu.
In Akure, Sunshine were forced to a 1-1 draw by Akwa United. Afolabi Okiki gave hosts Sunshine the lead after 12 minutes, before Friday Ubong drew Akwa level in the 24th minute. Akwa were reduced to 10 men after Godpower Igudia was sent off after a second booking in the second half.
The team from Uyo had to defend with their lives in the closing minutes as Sunshine chased a winning goal.
In other matches, Giwa fell 1-0 in Jos to visiting FC IfeanyiUbah, Wikki stopped El Kanemi 1-0 in Katsina and Warri Wolves played out a 0-0 draw at Heartland.
In Owerri, Heartland and Warri Wolves played out a goalless draw. The home side dominated proceedings, but were repelled by their determined visitors who were keen not to go back to their base empty handed.
