Wikki Tourists coach Audu Maikaba is heavily tipped to be named as new Golden Eaglets coach after Manu Garba rejected a proposal to drop down to the country’s U17s.
“Maikaba is the front runner to replace Amuneke as coach of world champions Golden Eaglets,” a reliable source informed on Thursday.
‘Audu Soccer’ Maikaba led Bauchi club to fourth place in the Nigeria premier league despite operating a shoe-string budget.
They only missed out on a continental ticket on goal difference. He has also worked at hometown club Kano Pillars and Enyimba.
It was specially gathered that this week Manu rejected the Eaglets post when he was offered it by the technical committee, who argued he could again repeat the magic of 2013 when the team won the FIFAU17 World Cup in style in Abu Dhabi.

However, by the time the coach rescinded his decision, the NFF had already contacted other coaches to take up the posts.
Maikaba gave the likes of Nigeria internationals Nosa Igiebor and Anthony Ujah their first big break in Nigeria before they moved to Europe. He is reputed to be a grassroots coach with a special eye for young special players.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Amuneke has been confirmed as the new coach of the Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed Amuneke’s elevation from the U17s in a communiqué.
