It was a show of shame on Sunday in Akure after fans attacked match officials during a Week 36 league game involving home team Sunshine Stars and Lobi Stars. The match was stopped with 10 minutes left on the clock when the fans invaded the pitch to beat up match officials as well as the team manager of Sunshine Adeleke.
An official of Lobi Stars was also attacked and later rushed to hospital. Lobi opened scoring after six minutes through Abdulrahman Bashir, but the home fans became unruly when they felt Sunshine ought to have been awarded two penalties in the course of the game. After topping the league table for several weeks, Sunshine Stars title challenge has slipped in recent weeks.
The League Management Company (LMC) has banned Akure Stadium from hosting league games for a year following the unruly behaviour of the club's fans, who stormed the pitch and attacked match officials in Sunday’s clash against Lobi Stars. Their next three home games will be played in Lagos Sunshine were also fined five million Naira (N5m) for field encroachment. Their supporters are banned for rest of season for persistent disorderly conduct forcing abrupt end of Week 36 game.
