Sunderland will not be taking up an option to sign former Schalke striker Chinedu Obasi.
The 29-year-old forward has been on trial with Sam Allardyce's squad but has been struggling to prove his fitness after breaking a leg earlier in the year.
The free agent, who is a Nigeria international but has a German passport, is now exploring other options.
In his three years with Schalke, Obasi scored just four goals in 34 games in all competitions. He was signed by the club after a brief loan spell in 2012, having netted 25 goals in 91 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim.
The striker previously played for Norwegian second division side Lyn before moving to Hoffenheim in 2007, and has 18 caps for Nigeria.
