Chelsea are set to give up their attempt to sign John Stones and instead take Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour in a deal worth £15million.
The Premier League champions have decided to look elsewhere for a top-class central defender after Everton turned down their latest bid worth £38m.
The decision will come not only as a blow to Stones but also to Liverpool who have been linked with the 26-year-old Tunisian international but will now find their efforts gazumped.
Chelsea have opened negotiations with Monaco for Abdennour, whose varied career has seen him play for Werder Bremen and Toulouse, and are confident they can make the deal happen before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
He has a strong left foot and can fill in at left back, which will probably appeal to Jose Mourinho. He was also part of a mean Monaco defence. Last season Monaco shipped just 26 goals in Ligue 1, the best record in the league and six fewer than Chelsea.
